Hakalau Forest Reserve Exclusive provides nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers a rare and exciting opportunity to experience one of Hawaii's most biodiverse regions. With restricted-access permits, visitors to Hawaii's National Wildlife Refuge can gain entry and witness firsthand its fascinating flora and fauna endemic to this beautiful state.
Hakalau rainforest is home to some of the rarest plants and animals found anywhere, such as carnivorous caterpillars and happy-faced spiders. Visitors can search for native and endangered birds like Amakihi, Apapane, Elepaio, Akepa, Akiapolaau, and Iiwi with expert bird trackers providing guidance. Tour duration ranges between 11-12 hours. Participants should come prepared to navigate uneven or rocky terrain as well as cool, wet or muddy conditions during their hiking experience.
Walking sticks, binoculars, day packs and rain jackets will be provided, with visitors advised to wear sturdy closed-toed shoes or boots, long pants and light rain jacket. A deli-style lunch with assorted beverages will also be included on this moderate tour with a maximum group size of nine people; cancellations within the cancellation period and "no shows" will incur full payment for their tour.
